Successful 'International Premiere' of the MEGWARE HPC User Meeting

Chemnitz / Germany, 14 May 2013 – MEGWARE Computer GmbH, initiator of the 6th HPC User Meeting, the chip manufacturer INTEL and the storage specialist PANASAS draw extremely positive conclusions from this year's event.

It is already the sixth time that HPC experts have met in Chemnitz at the end of April to discover developments in the world of supercomputing and to network information from the cutting edge. This year once more, participants were greeted with an interesting series of talks on current topics from the fields of science, research and industry. "It was a successful start, bringing together the HPC industry in all its different facets and presenting the dimensions on hand in supercomputing in a context with measures to cut back on energy consumption", says Jana Mitschke, Marketing Manager at MEGWARE.

"We are very happy with the event, and feedback from the participants was positive across the board. Whereas last year's event was entirely German-language, it was opened this year by contacts from throughout Europe. A large numbers of participants from the fields of research, teaching and industry in Norway, the Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Austria and Germany came to Chemnitz to discuss and consult on methods, applications and opportunities in the world of 'green IT'. Acceptance of the MEGWARE HPC User Meeting and the positive feedback provide us with a lot of motivation to continue this event within an international framework", summarises HPC Delegate Jörg Heydemüller.

A series of talks provided the participants with exciting glimpses into life on the cutting edge. Axel Auweter from the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) held one talk on the topic of green IT. Under the title of 'Work Hard – Chill Smart', the hot water solution ColdCon was presented as the best-practice example. Insights into applications from research into 'Molecular and bio-molecular materials' at the National Institute for Research and Development for Isotopic in Romania indicated how researchers there are focusing more and more on supercomputers.

In addition, the event demonstrated that the current path of more intense cooperation between teaching and research, with constructive support from the industrial sector, is absolutely the right way forward. We in the supercomputing industry will only succeed in further enhancing the significance of green IT if we do it together, while at the same time enlarging on our collaboration. This is why we would be thrilled by the opportunity for more projects.

Also the cooperation partners who supported the 6th HPC User Meeting, among them Derek Burke, Director Channel Marketing EMEA at Panasas, draw a positive conclusion: “The Megware team's slick organisation and attention to detail ensured their HPC User Meeting was (again) a great event. As a proud sponsor for the second year running, Panasas values this terrific platform for interaction between customers and vendors. This year we noticed an evolution, incorporating customers across many countries and industries – yet Megware kept the discussions focused and highly relevant! Panasas looks forward to also being part of next year's event”, says Burke.

Günther Wernhard, Intel GmbH, also emphasises the importance of the event: "This is the second time that Intel has attended the MEGWARE HPC User Meeting, and we consider it an excellent opportunity to discuss current topics and technologies in the world of HPC with our customers and partners. All participants benefit from the breadth and quality of the talks – it really was a very successful meeting again."

The conference participants remained in talks on their experience until the end, discussing new challenges. In view of this significant interest, we are already excited, looking forward to the next MEGWARE HPC User Meeting in 2014.
